Citrix Workspace Cannot Start App: How to Fix It (and When to Call IT)
Citrix Workspace says "Cannot start app"? Refresh, end stuck sessions, check the browser hand-off, update or reset the app, and know when the fault is on the server.
By PC MomentUpdated 6 min read

You click an app or desktop in Citrix Workspace and instead of opening, it fails with “Cannot start app”. Sometimes it’s a problem on your PC, like a stuck session or an outdated Workspace app. Just as often the fault is on the Citrix servers, and only your IT team can fix it. The quickest first move is to close the app, refresh your apps, and try once more. If coworkers see the same error, go straight to IT.
What causes “Cannot start app” in Citrix Workspace
Citrix’s troubleshooting documentation for Workspace app for Windows splits launch failures into two groups.
Server-side causes (only your administrator can fix these):
- The resource was removed or disabled by the administrator.
- The desktop is under planned maintenance, or no desktops are available.
- There are no free session slots.
- The server is missing the right license.
- An unknown error occurred while opening the resource.
Client-side causes (things you can often fix yourself):
- The launch file (the
.icafile) couldn’t be retrieved or started. - Citrix Workspace app is missing, or the store configuration can’t be found.
- A server certificate problem.
- An active session already exists.
- The authentication session expired.
The on-screen message rarely tells you which one you have, so work through the client fixes below and stop as soon as one helps.
Quick fixes at a glance
| Fix | When it helps | Time / risk |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh apps and retry | Session or app list is out of date | 1 minute, no risk |
| End stuck sessions in Connection Center | An app hung or a session is still open | 2 minutes, unsaved work in that app is lost |
| Fix the browser hand-off | You launch from a web browser | 2 minutes, no risk |
| Check the version and updates | Old or half-updated Workspace app | 5 minutes, low risk |
| Reset App Data | Settings or stored data are damaged | 5 minutes, you must sign in again |
| Reinstall Workspace app | Nothing else helps on your PC | 15 minutes, may need admin rights |
| Collect logs and contact IT | Error affects others or keeps coming back | 10 minutes, no risk |
How to fix “Cannot start app”
Fix 1: Refresh your apps and try again
Citrix’s help center gives this as the way to refresh: open Citrix Workspace app, click the Accounts icon, then click Refresh. Wait a few seconds and launch the app again.
If that doesn’t help, sign out of Workspace, close it fully, open it again and sign back in. This gets you a fresh authentication session, which matters if the error showed up after the app had been open for a long time.
Fix 2: End stuck sessions in Connection Center
If an earlier session of the same app froze, a new launch can fail. Citrix’s help center explains how to clear it on Windows:
- Right-click the Citrix Workspace icon in the notification area (bottom-right of the taskbar).
- Select Connection Center.
- To end one unresponsive app, select it and click Terminate.
- To close every active session on a server at once, select the server and click Log Off.
Important: Terminate and Log Off close the remote apps. Anything you haven’t saved in them is lost.
Then launch the app again.
Fix 3: Fix the browser hand-off (web launches)
If you open apps from a Citrix web page in your browser instead of the Workspace app, the browser has to hand the launch to Citrix Workspace. Per Citrix’s StoreFront user guide:
- When the browser asks to open Citrix Workspace Launcher, allow it. You can tick the option to always allow it for that site so you don’t get asked each time.
- If the page says Citrix Workspace app wasn’t found, choose Detect again.
- To re-run detection later, open the settings menu, go to Account Settings, and under Advanced select Change Citrix Workspace app.
Some stores also offer Use light version, which runs apps in the browser instead of the installed app. If it’s available, it’s a quick way to check whether the problem is your local Workspace app.
Note: Citrix recommends that administrators disable the older “Already installed” option, which downloads a
.icafile to open by hand, because of reduced security and features. Don’t ask IT to turn it back on as a fix.
Fix 4: Check your version and updates
- Right-click the Citrix Workspace icon in the notification area.
- Select Advanced Preferences. Your version is shown in the About section.
- On versions before 2207, Citrix Workspace Updates in the same window controls update notifications. From version 2207 on, Citrix says updates are automatic.
If your version is very old compared with what your coworkers use, ask IT whether an update is due. On managed PCs, IT usually controls updates.
Fix 5: Reset App Data
Citrix Workspace app for Windows 2309 and later has a Troubleshooting menu:
- Right-click the Citrix Workspace icon in the notification area.
- Select Troubleshooting.
- Choose Reset App Data and confirm.
Citrix’s documentation lists this option but doesn’t spell out exactly what it clears, so treat it as a clean start: you’ll need to sign in again. Have your store or workspace URL ready (IT can give it to you).
Tip: The same menu has Check Configuration, Collect Logs and Send Feedback. Citrix notes that feedback is for suggestions only; for problems that need fixing, contact your administrator.
Fix 6: Uninstall and reinstall Citrix Workspace
Important: On a work computer, reinstalling usually needs admin rights and the version your company approves. Ask IT before you uninstall.
On a personal PC, Citrix’s steps are:
- Type Control Panel in the taskbar search box and open it.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click Citrix Workspace (followed by its version number), select Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- If you’re asked to uninstall the Citrix HDX RTME package first, click OK.
- Restart, then install the current Citrix Workspace app from Citrix’s download page or the link your organization provides.
Fix 7: Collect logs for IT
If the error keeps coming back, logs save everyone time. Citrix’s documentation describes Advanced Preferences > Log collection: pick a level, start collecting, reproduce the error, stop and save the file. Send it to your help desk together with the app name, the time it failed and a screenshot of the message. Our guide on how to take a screenshot on Windows 11 shows the fastest ways.
On version 2507.1 and later, Citrix also documents a Troubleshoot Connection check for Citrix DaaS that tests each hop from your device to the virtual machine and suggests a fix, such as refreshing the resource list, signing in again or reinstalling. It’s on by default for DaaS.
When “Cannot start app” is a job for IT
Stop troubleshooting your PC and contact your help desk when:
- Coworkers get the same error for the same app.
- Other apps in your Workspace work and only one fails every time.
- The message mentions maintenance, licensing, no available desktops or a removed resource.
- You can’t sign in to Workspace at all on a work PC. If Windows itself also refuses domain sign-ins, see the trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed.
Those are settings on the Citrix servers (StoreFront, the Delivery Controller or the virtual machines themselves) that you can’t change from your computer.
If it still doesn’t work
- Try another network. If apps start on a different connection, the problem is between your PC and the company network. If your laptop’s wireless is unstable, our guide to Wi-Fi not working on a laptop walks through the fixes.
- Try another device, or the light (browser) version if your store offers it. If that works, the problem is your local Workspace app, so a reinstall (Fix 6) is the next step.
- Write down what changed recently, such as a Windows update, a new Workspace version or a password change. Our computer repair tips explain why that note speeds up any diagnosis.
- Send the logs from Fix 7 to IT and let them take it from there.

Frequently asked questions
Why does Citrix Workspace say "Cannot start app"?
The app or desktop you clicked couldn't be launched. The cause can be on your PC (a stuck session, an outdated or damaged Workspace app, a browser that doesn't hand the launch to the app) or on the server side (the resource was disabled, no session slots are free, a licensing problem or maintenance).
Is "Cannot start app" my fault or a server problem?
If coworkers get the same error for the same app, it's almost certainly server-side and only your IT team or Citrix administrator can fix it. If only you are affected, try the client fixes: refresh, end stuck sessions, update, reset or reinstall.
What does Reset App Data do in Citrix Workspace?
It's an option in the Troubleshooting menu of Citrix Workspace app for Windows 2309 and later, used to set the app back to a clean state. Expect to sign in again, so have your store or workspace URL ready, and ask IT first on a managed work PC.
How do I check which version of Citrix Workspace I have?
Right-click the Citrix Workspace icon in the notification area, select Advanced Preferences, and look in the About section.
Can I uninstall and reinstall Citrix Workspace myself?
On a personal PC, yes: uninstall it from Control Panel > Programs and Features, then install the current version. On a work PC you usually need admin rights, so ask IT to do it.
