Do you need to share some files with another PC and you don’t have a media storage to do that?
You just want to have the knowledge of how to connect two computers via Lan cable in windows.
In either case:
You are at the right place.
This article will take you step by step on how to do this minor networking.
One of the reasons why I like this connection and why you too should learn it is:
At the end of the day, the transfer rate between the two connected computers will be above 10 MB Per seconds.
That is awesome compared to 1 MB that you will get when using Wi Fi.
Let’s get started. Shall we.
What You Will Need
The two computers
A crossover cable
Connect the computers
Connect one end of the cable to the ethernet port of one the computers, connect the other end of the cable to the ethernet port of the second computer.
You will see a yellow tringle sign on the network icon if the two computers are connected together.
IP Configuration on the first computer
You need to give each computer an IP address before the two will be able to communicate.
If you don’t know what an IP address means read computer networking basics.
On one of the computers:
Right click on the network Icon on your task bar.
Select Open Network and Sharing Center
At times, you will not see this network icon on the taskbar. Just search for network in the search window.
Click Network and Sharing Center.
When the window opens:
You will see all the active networks you can connect to.
In this case, click Local Area Network.
Don’t forget that we are here to set IP address on the machine.
A box will open, select properties.
Another box will open where you will either double click `Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) …
You click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then click on properties.
The Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) properties window will open.
Select the second button box “Use the following IP address”.
You are not obtaining IP address automatically.
To make things easier:
At the front of IP address, put 192.168.1.2
At the front of subnet just click the box and it will fill itself with 255.255.255.0
Those are the two boxes you need to fill.
Leave the rest as they are.
Hit the OK button below.
Now move to the second computer.
IP Configuration on the second computer
You will do the same thing you did for the first computer except that the IP address.
The IP address for the second computer will not the same with the first computer.
Use 192.168.1.3 and the same Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
The two computers will connect to each other after all these settings.
Share the Files
Now that the two computers are connected together, you can easily share files between them.
Right click on the folder and Select properties.
When the properties box open, select the sharing pane.
Click on share, select the drop-down menu and pick everyone then hit add.
Click share below.
Another box will open, click Done below.
Now go back to the sharing pane and click Advance Sharing.
Select Share this folder.
Under the comment box you will see permissions, click it. A new window will open, select Full control (you can give privilege as you wish) and hit OK.
Click OK below the Apply.
The case is a bit different if you want to share a drive on the network.
Right click on the drive and select properties as you will for a normal folder.
Go to the sharing pane and click Advance Sharing.
Check share this folder and give permission (full control or however you like it).
This is the difference between a folder and a drive.
The go to the security pane and click Advance.
What you will do now is to share the drive for every computer on the network.
After you click advance a box will open, click Change permissions.
Another box will open:
If you are using Windows 7 click Add.
But if it Windows 8, Click select a principal.
Now that you have shared a folder, it is time to access the folder from the other machine.
On the second computer that wants to access the shared folder, type \\”ip address of folder’s computer”.
Hit the enter key.
Just open the folder or the drive and access the files.
I made mention that the transfer rate of this network connection is above 10MB/seconds.
Here is the prove.
